💡 1 SOLUTION FOR EFFECTIVE MINISTRY
Focus on What You’re Building, Not Just What You’re Avoiding
It is much better to focus on what you want to achieve rather than what you want to avoid. It’s fun to run toward something rather than run away. What sounds more motivating?
In ministry and in life, it’s easy to define success by what we’re trying to avoid:
But simply avoiding something doesn’t lead to something better. Instead, it’s far more effective (and motivating) to focus on what you’re trying to build.
Which sounds more energizing?
Avoiding burnout and stress
Avoiding unproductive and time-sucking meetings
Avoiding being “that kind” of leader or church
OR
Creating sustainable weekly rhythms of health
Only scheduling meetings with a clear end time and agenda
Having a short list of characteristics of the type of leader you want to be
Avoidance might spark short-term change, but it won’t sustain you. Vision will.
Yes, progress will often include restraint, but restraint isn't the goal. A better future is.
If you want to build a more intentional Sunday experience, you might need to stop doing five disconnected things during the week that aren’t helping anyone. But the win isn’t “doing less.” The win is “doing what matters more effectively.”
If you want to be a healthier leader, it might mean going to bed earlier, delegating more, or taking real days off—but not just because those are “good things.” It’s because doing them will help you be fully engaged with your people, your family, and your calling.
Start by asking:
What kind of leader, pastor, or spouse do I want to become?
What kind of church are we building?
Once you answer that, the changes become obvious.
Don’t just run from thing, run toward the life and ministry God is calling you to build.

🤔 1 CHALLENGE FOR LIFE AND MINISTRY
This week, write down one specific thing you're trying to avoid in your life or ministry and then reframe it as a goal you're pursuing. Instead of saying “I need to stop ___,” ask, “What am I trying to build instead?” Then take one small step toward that better future.
